The Traffic Light Method

I have more than one client facing some people challenges right now. Some have the right people in the wrong positions.

Some are paying the piper for those 2021 raises and promotions that were dished out to keep warm bodies during The Great Resignation.

Who is doing what, are they doing it well? Should their title change? How do I bring on someone new at a competitive wage without having to give raises to my existing crew?

These are constant questions I hear. My answer is always a question in return: "Are they worth it?"

To guage value, I like to measure workload and competencies with the Traffic Light Method.

Realistically, a good team member will have a healthy mixture of green lights with some yellow mixed in. Yellow lights are often an opportunity for leadership to lead and mentor while red lights are a call for action.

🔴 Why aren't they performing the task?

🔴 Is the task beyond their ability?

🔴 Are they no longer the person for the position?

Too often employers, especially in small businesses, hold onto low performers because "it's better than no one at all". Which leads to toxic environments and a long term waste of resources.

Stop being afraid to cut loose dead weight or even restructure the crew you do have.

Change is hard, but it's worth it!

Need help with your small business? I'm here to help establish healthy expectations and implement structure and strategies for realistic operations!
